On Appreciating Just How Shallow f/2.8 Actually Is

It was a pretty wet weekend here in Portland. Sporadic breaks of blue sky and sun would essentially flanked with varying heaviness of rain. So goes PDX, I guess.

One of the goals that I looked forward to meeting this weekend, though, was getting at least one shot for what is quickly becoming a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine – #MacroMonday . This Search Tag is curated by the G+ G.L.O.M. (Gorgeous Ladies of Macro – +Kelli Seeger Kim, +Kerry Murphy and +Jennifer Eden).

Admittedly, it had been a very, very long time since I slapped on the ol’ 100mm Macro lens. I forgot just how sensitive f/2.8 actually is when you’re focusing in that closely. If you look at the little branch, you’ll notice the water drop is perfectly in focus and as you trail upward, we start getting into a break and very quickly lose focus. The branch actually bent backwards, maybe by 1 or 2 millimeters, but it was enough for it to essentially exit the plane of focus.

It was a quick reminder of how much padding I need to factor in as far as my f-stop goes when getting all intimiate with my macro subjects. But, the good news is that it rekindled all sorts of fun ideas and I’m really excited to take part of this awesome Monday tradition.

Thanks for curating it, ladies!

In terms of processing
Nothing very special here. One exposure taken with my Canon 100mm Macro lens. As you can see, the water drop was my focal point with not much wiggle room. I did position it aggressively against the left side of the frame so that I could fill the right side with some shrubbery, thereby breaking up the rather bleak color.

Stylization was achieved in Perfect Effects 3 by +onOne Software. Mostly a custom Duotone with some tonal contrast masked onto the drop for texture.

Final touches in Adobe Lightroom 4.1 RC.
