A Stroll Over The Dunes

A Stroll Over The Dunes

After missing a sunrise shoot at the Mesquite Dunes, I decided to make the most out of the downtime we had and took a little solo time photographing the dunes in the early afternoon. There were two primary items that I wanted to check off on my agenda during this shoot – the first was to photograph a solitary tree or bush in the sand and the second was to give a sense of scale by including other visitors. Thankfully, I had the newer Canon 70-200 and 1.4x Teleconverter (courtesy of +BorrowLenses.com) so reach wasn’t a problem. WIth the longer focal length came lens compression, which also helped accentuate the scale.

In terms of processing
I brought out texture and temperature (warming the foreground and cooling the background) using customer Color Enhancers in Perfect Effects 4 by +onOne Software. I also created a shallow depth of field with FocalPoint2.

Final touches were applied using Lightroom 4.3.

The sand has a very silky look – it's a beautiful image.

Super photo!  It looks surreal.  There is such an interesting contrast between the foreground sand and the distant mountains.
